Project: Making Pinfold Memorial Garden
Following the sale of the Methodist Chapel the Parish Council decided to improve the overall look of the Pinfold. One meter was sold to the Chapel owner to provide access to the rear of the building. The rest of the area has been made into a quiet space for contemplation remembering those who had died particularly during the Covid period when funerals were drastically limited.
History
The Eggleston Pinfold has been parish property since the 1800s. It is historic landholding and had a specific purpose. The use of Pinfolds was first recorded over 500 years ago and was a feature in most English medieval villages. These were high walled, square lockable structures with fresh grass and running water. They were used to hold stray animals - pigs, sheep, geese or cattle – until claimed by their owner. The owner paid a fee to the Pinman, technically for all the feed their animals had consumed. They were known as POUNDFOLDs in the south of England.
In 2022 our Pinfold has been made into a memorial garden. A place to remember those parishioners and relatives who died during covid when funerals were strictly limited by numbers. It is also for remembering family and local people we have loved and lost. It is a quiet reflective space that offers seating for those walking around the village – a resting place. You can find memory stones in the garden naming those remembered.
